Inspiring Future Doctors
Supporting Portsmouth and Solent youngsters to achieve their dream of becoming doctors
About Us
We are a charitable trust dedicated to helping aspiring doctors in our community. The Trust was founded in honour of Dr Mike King by Dr Manish Patel. Both doctors were raised in Portsmouth and returned to the city to work for our community
Work Experience
Successful Applications
If you don’t have the contacts through family and friends, it is difficult for youngsters in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas to get work experience. Any aspiring doctors who are studying for their A-Levels can join our community by contacting us through the ‘Contact Us’ page. With a connected network of doctors who volunteer their time and expertise to provide necessary Work Experience, we open doors for youngsters to work alongside doctors in the region. Students on our “Aspiring Medics Programme’ will be matched up with doctors in their workplaces. Students start with the ‘Observe GP’ programme and start their reflective diaries ready for their all important interviews
Mentoring
We meet regularly with the potential medical students from sixth forms studying A-Levels at one of the sixth forms in ‘The Mike King Partnership.’ Our team of volunteer doctors, careers advisors and academic leads across The Mike King Partnership mentor and coach students through the potential minefield of the UCAT and interview preparations. Our annual MMI event attended by over 20 local doctors is an unparalleled opportunity for students to practice interview techniques from working doctors. The events are completely funded by the trust for students attending a sixth form in the partnership or who live in Portsmouth
Workshops
Alongside our Further Education partners, we organise multiple events throughout the year to support students with their applications to medical school. We organise Speed date interviews, an ‘Essential Reading Book Club’, Application workshops and 'Preparing for the UCAT’ workshops.
